Safety Specialist

About the Job
The Safety Specialist conducts daily field inspections of active construction projects, coaches supervisors and subcontractors on safe work practices, and supports implementation and verification of corrective actions to ensure compliance with company policies and applicable safety standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Conducts daily safety inspections of assigned jobsites to identify unsafe conditions and at-risk behaviors.
  • Drafts inspection reports to document inspection findings in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and communicates inspection findings with site supervision, recommends corrective actions, follows up to verify implementation on subsequent inspections.
  • Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems.
  • Conducts or assists with employee safety orientation, toolbox talks, and task-specific training as assigned.
  • Reviews subcontractor safety documentation (e.g., SSSPs, AHAs/JHAs, training records, equipment inspections) for completeness and compliance with company requirements
  • Inspects safety and work equipment; recommends replacements.
  • Assists with incident response, including coordinating medical treatment and gathering information for incident reports and investigations.
  • Assists the Safety Director and project team with incident/near-miss investigations, root cause analysis, and development of corrective actions.
  • The Safety Specialist has the authority to stop work when serious or imminent hazards are identified and is expected to promptly notify the Safety Director and project leadership.
  • Assists the Safety Director with other safety or training-related tasks as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

COMPETENCY:
  • Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to influence, coach and train field personnel at all levels, including subcontractors, without direct supervisory authority.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deliver difficult safety messages constructively.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365, safety management software, and other related software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to travel to the assigned jobsite is required to conduct safety inspections.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the jobsites, including use of ladders, scaffolds and walk/work on uneven, unimproved surfaces, roofs and other surfaces typical in construction.
  • Must be able to access all parts of the jobsite mobile equipment for inspections.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the construction site in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, snow) in outdoor environments.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in safety, construction management, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2+ years of construction safety or field supervision experience required.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction required (or obtained within 60 days of hire).
  • First Aid/CPR certification required (or obtained within 60 days of hire).
  • BCSP credentials (STS-C, CHST, etc.) preferred but not required.
  • Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
    • Full-time non-exempt position. The expected hours of work are 40 hours per week.

TRAVEL:
Daily local travel to job sites is required. Most projects are within approximately one hour’s drive of Concord, NH. Overnight travel is not typically required.

Education:
  • High school or equivalent (Preferred).

Experience:
  • Construction Safety: 2 years (Required).

License/Certification:
  • OSHA 30 (Preferred).

Willingness to travel:
  • 100% (Required).
